Beyond the Tape: 5 Simple Habits to Extend Your Paddle's Life

Posted by Johnny Do on

Edge guard tape protects the part of your paddle that takes the most abuse, but it's one piece of a bigger picture. Here are five more habits that add real years to your paddle's life.

1. Store it out of direct heat

A hot car trunk in summer is one of the fastest ways to warp a paddle core or degrade the face material. If you're not playing within the hour, get it out of the heat.

2. Wipe it down after play

Sweat and court dust left on the face over time can dull grip texture and, on some paddles, affect the surface finish. Thirty seconds with a dry cloth after each session is enough.

3. Rotate your grip before it's slick

A worn grip changes how you hold the paddle without you realizing it, which changes your shots. Replace it before it gets slick, not after.

4. Avoid paddle-down on hard courts

It's an easy habit to fall into between points, but every drop is an impact your edge tape has to absorb. Lean it against your leg or the net post instead.

5. Check your edge tape every few weeks

A quick visual check catches lifting corners or thin spots before they turn into real damage to the paddle underneath. If it's time for a fresh layer, grab a set and save while you're at it.

None of this takes much time, but it's the difference between a paddle that lasts one season and one that lasts several.
