5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Edge Guard Tape

Posted by Johnny Do on

Edge guard tape takes a beating so your paddle doesn't have to. But tape wears out, and playing on worn-out tape defeats the purpose of having it. Here's when to swap it out.

1. It's lifting at the corners

Corners take the most impact from mishits and paddle-down moments. Once the tape starts peeling at a corner, moisture and grit work their way underneath, and the lift will only spread.

2. You can see the paddle edge through worn spots

Tape thins out with repeated contact, especially if you play aggressively at the kitchen line. If the underlying edge is visible through the tape in high-contact zones, the protection there is basically gone.

3. It's gone stiff or brittle

Fresh tape has a bit of give, which is part of what protects against chip damage. Old tape that's gone hard and brittle cracks on impact instead of absorbing it.

4. The adhesive isn't holding like it used to

If you're re-pressing the same spots down every session, the adhesive has broken down. That's a maintenance chore you shouldn't have to do — and a sign the tape is past its useful life.

5. It's been a full season

Even tape that looks fine benefits from a scheduled swap. If you play regularly, a fresh layer every season keeps your paddle looking sharp and protects against damage you can't see yet.
