14mm vs 16mm: How to Choose the Right Edge Guard Tape Size

One of the most common questions we get is simple: do I need the 14mm or the 16mm tape? Get the size wrong and you'll end up with tape that either doesn't fully cover the edge or overhangs and peels. Here's how to get it right the first time.

Why paddle edge thickness varies

Paddle manufacturers don't all build to the same edge profile. Thinner, more control-oriented paddles often run closer to 14mm along the edge, while power-oriented paddles with thicker cores can run 16mm or more. There's no universal standard, which is exactly why we offer both sizes instead of a one-size-fits-all tape.

How to measure your paddle

  1. Grab a ruler or a pair of calipers if you have them.
  2. Measure the exposed edge of the paddle, from the face on one side to the face on the other — not the handle, the hitting surface edge.
  3. Round to the nearest whole millimeter.

If you land right in between, size up. A slightly wider tape can be trimmed flush with a hobby knife; a tape that's too narrow will leave a gap where debris and moisture can get in.

No calipers? Use this shortcut

Check your paddle manufacturer's spec sheet — edge thickness is usually listed alongside core thickness. If it's not listed, most standard paddles on the market today fall closer to 16mm, which is why it's our most popular size across every style.
